Advertising and contemporary culture - Research Paper Example Advertising also involves a sponsor who is the person who pays for the advertisement. All of these factors work together in an attempt to sell a product, service or concept to a target population through branding. Branding is described as forming an image associated with a certain product in the mind of the consumer. It involves gender studies, semiotics and effective mediums of advertising. Contemporary culture refers to the existence of different genres of something within the same frame of time. When we talk of contemporary culture, we talk about the different ethnicities, religions, societies and economies that exist today. With the world growing smaller due to increased mediums of communication, it seems that the advertiserÃ¢â¬â¢s job would be easier. However, it has gotten all the more difficult since not only has the market become more competitive but finances have become limited and while sponsors ask for maximum cost efficiency, designing campaigns that are targeted yet ef fective has become a challenge. Mass campaigns are cost effective but the message might be suitable for one market and outright offensive for the other. Similarly, popup, advergaming and emails are also a popular medium of advertisement among the younger lot. The effectiveness of a medium of communication is not just measured by the age of a target audience. It has a lot to do with the size of an audience as well . Crowdsourcing is a very popular approach when the target audience is huge, the ad is supposed to be Ã¢â¬Ëmost-buzzed-aboutÃ¢â¬â¢ (Elliott) and has to be reached within limited finances. Google, HersheyÃ¢â¬â¢s, Microsoft and Mini Cooper have adopted this approach. Global advertising is aimed at a much larger audience with a view to expand globally. For this reason, advertisers rely on advertising researches, look for ideas that have the potential to travel (Global Marketing Management) and increase the companiesÃ¢â¬â¢ pace of implementation. Regulation of Muscle Hypertrophy Essay Our skeletal muscles make up 40-50% of our total mass and are essential for all humans to move, breath, and stand up straight. For the first 20 years of our lives and for those physically active after our muscles are continually growing. Satellite cells are responsible for this growth in our skeletal muscle and are referred to as muscle stem cells. When skeletal muscle cells are traumatized due to physical trauma or disease the regeneration process includes three general processes, destruction, regeneration and remodeling. What regulates these three processes? How are they signaled to initiate the cell cycle and what nutrients and systems do they require to carry out the processes of regeneration and growthÃ¢â¬ ? Muscle regeneration is a daily occurrence for almost animals. The complex systems involved in regenerating the organ system that makes up over 40% of our bodies need to communicate properly, understanding how this is done can open doors for recreational and medical opportunities. Main Point: Understanding the regulation of muscle hypertrophy requires an understanding of satellite cells (SC), the environment they reside in (niche) and the growth factors that stimulate and inhibit their activation. Sub Point: Satellite Cells lie in a specific niche that allows them to remain inactive until needed, residing between the sarcolemma and basal membrane of muscle cells (myofibrils). One side of the cell is attached to the basal membrane by two factors. First, the satellite cell has a layer of integrin alpha7beta1 which lies on the side where growth factors and inhibitors from the vasculature, autocrine and motor neuron systems can be received to signal an active or inactive state. Anchoring the satellite cell and its layer of integrin to the basal membrane are laminin, creating a selectively permeable membrane. On the opposite side where the satellite cell resides in a small recess on the myofibril, the satellite cell is attached to the sarcolemma by M-cadherine. On the myofibril side the satellite cell receives signals from the immune system and the myocyte nucleus. The location of SCs allows signals to be sent from multiple systems, such as Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), which is secreted from the Extracellular Matrix (ECM). (Kralaki, Fili, Philippou Koutserilieris. 2009). Satellite cell structure is somewhat unique because for the most part of their existence in a healthy body they are quiescent or inactive. Because of their mostly dormant stages they have few organelles and an abundance of cytoplasm (Kralaki, Fili, Philippou Koutserilieris. 2009). Also noted is the higher concentration of satellite cells near neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) as well as a higher concentration near slow twitch muscle fibers compared to fast twitch fibers. The reason for these concentrations is currently unknown. Lastly, muscle cell concentration dramatically decreases after birth and decreases further through age. In mice it was shown that after birth satellite cells accounted for 30% of sublaminar muscle nuclei and at the age of 2 months that number has shrunk to less than 5%, showing that satellite cells play in important role in early generation of muscles and limbs (Kuang, Gillespie Rudnicki, 2012). Sub Point: Satellite Cells are activated by growth factors (MGFs) when muscles are damaged. There are many systems known and suspected of influencing SC activation and deactivation. Some include the vascular system, the immune system, the neuromuscular system, the autocrine system, and finally the myocyte nucleus. Most of the activation is influenced by the immune system after a muscle cell has been damaged. Once traumatized, Necrophils and Macrophages of the immune system migrate to the site of damage and phagocyte the damaged muscle cell material while releasing growth factors to activate quiescent SCs. At the same time the growth factors stored in the extra cellular matrix, vascular systems, and myocyte nuclei are also released after muscle injury. Examples of the growth factors released by all of these systems are HGF, IGF-1, and IGF-2. These factors bind to satellite cells and initiate SC migration to the damaged cite and start the mitotic cell cycle. Research regarding migration of satellite cells to damaged sites is in its early stages of understanding, what seems to be agreed upon is that factors released from the ECM, immune system, and muscle cells affect the migration of SCs to damaged sites. One factor, TGF-beta, which is released by the immune system is thought to directly attract satellite cells to damaged areas as experiments with a TGF-beta antibody extract reduced SC migration (Griffin, 2009). Activated SCs express MyoD and Myf5 (Broek, Gregte Hoff, 2010). The up regulation of these two factors is evident in every initially activated SC. There are more than 20 different chemo reactants being studied that are known to somehow affect SC migration (Griffin, 2009). Sub Point: SCs proliferate and rebuild at the site of damaged myofibrils. a. SC enter the cell cycle when activated, creating both unspecified stem cells and myofiber specific cells which fuse with existing cells to bridge and fill the damaged area. (Ciciliot Schiaffino, 2010) b. M-cadherin attaches SCs to a myofiber, which is crucial for cell-to-cell fusion and proliferation c. 8 key growth factors are known to stimulate and inhibit the processes of muscle cell regeneration. (Broek, Gregte Hoff, 2010) Conclusion: Current research has yielded information about the regulatory proteins and hormones that trigger satellite cells and immune responses to either inhibit or activate muscle hypertrophy. The knowledge associated with what turns on and off specific systems of muscle cell activity advances medical solutions to muscle atrophy and recreational solutions to body building and general muscle health. Future research could yield treatments that alleviate various diseases associated with muscle failure and degeneration as well as advancements in sports medicine and injury rehabilitation.

History of Ancient China China is located in East Asia. Ancient China is surrounded by Gobi Desert in the north, the Pacific Ocean in the east, the Himalayan Mountains in the southwest, and the Taklimakan desert in the west. This land has a wide variation of animals because of the different habitats provided for them. Most farming was done in the very fertile lands of the Yangtze valley. Present China is much bigger than Ancient China, which means that over time, the kings and different dynasties went gaining more and more land and wealth. All of the major rivers go in a western to eastern direction, and end up in the Pacific Ocean. The two major rivers of China are the Yangtze and the Huan He. The major river of North China is the Huang He, or Ã ¨yellow riverÃ ¨. This river left loess when the banks were flooded; desert winds brought this to this area. The Huang He also gained the name of Ã¢â¬Å"ChinaÃ¢â¬â¢s SorrowÃ¢â¬ , because in the past, it has destroyed large areas by flooding them. People used these rivers mostly for irrigation and transportation. The plant life In China is very varied. The natural forests are in the far-off mountain areas, where you can find are oak, ginkgo, pine, azalea, and camellia. Also, a tree that would come to everyoneÃ¢â¬â¢s mind as they think of China, is the bamboo. China is far away from any other civilizations at this time, so the people that lived there had to make their own goods, instead of trading things with other civilizations. Trade did exist, for example through the Silk Road, but not so many as in present day. Some of the species of animals in Ancient China were the paddlefish, some species of alligators and salamanders, water deer, giant pandas, apes, bears, leopards, wild horses, and birds of all types. Ancient China did have mineral resources. The most common and used were tin and copper, to make bronze. Chinese worked very well with bronze. Also iron was very important. Jade was more precious than gold for the Chinese. GOVERNMENT ChinaÃ¢â¬â¢s government was ruled by an emperor (king). The king had to do a very good job, and his people would have to like his work and effort, if not, they overthrew him and someone else came to rule. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a narrative novel written by John Boyne. This book was first published in 2006. This novel explores the adventures of Bruno, the son of a Nazi commandant, who meets a young Jewish boy called Shmuel at the concentration near his new house at Out-With. Nothing can stop the two becoming best friends, not even a barbed wire fence. The story is set in Germany during the Second World War. This essay explores how the themes (the effect of war on children and families, innocence of children and the cruelty and unfairness of discrimination) are conveyed through narrative techniques (setting, character and plot). The innocence of children is a theme that is frequently used throughout the novel. Character is a narrative technique utilised to convey this particular theme. Bruno and Shmuel are characters in the novel who convey the theme, the innocence of children. Bruno conveys this theme by not knowing the other side of the fence was a concentration camp, Ã¢â¬ Å"An opportunity to see what was really on the other side of the fence before he went back to Berlin.Ã¢â¬ Bruno also believes venturing to the other side of the fence is a sensible plan and a good way to finish of his stay at Out-With, Ã¢â¬Å"All in all, it seemed like a very sensible plan and a great way to say goodbye.Ã¢â¬ Shmuel also conveys this theme because he doesnÃ¢â¬â¢t realise his father has been killed by one of the NaziÃ¢â¬â¢s, Ã¢â¬Å"Shmuel saw a chance to get someone to help him in the search for his papa.Ã¢â¬ Another example of this theme is when Bruno presumes there was a cafÃ © and a shop at the concentration camp, Ã¢â¬Å"He had thought there would be a shop in the centre, and maybe a small cafÃ ©.Ã¢â¬ Bruno also thought the girls and boys living in the concentration camp played tennis, football, skipping and hopscotch, Ã¢â¬Å"He thought that all the boys and girls who lived here would be in different groups, playing tennis or football, skipping and drawing out squares for hopscotch on the ground.Ã¢â¬ Cruelty and unfairness of discrimination is a theme broadly used throughout the novel. The various settings in the book convey this theme. When Bruno looks around the concentration camp he saw two different types of people: unhappy, crying Jews in their striped pyjamas and ha ppy, laughing, shouting soldiers in their uniforms, Ã¢â¬Å"In fact everywhere he look, all he could see was two different types of people: either happy, laughing, shouting soldiers in their uniforms or unhappy, crying people in their striped pyjamas.Ã¢â¬ WhenÃ Bruno and Gretel look out of BrunoÃ¢â¬â¢s window they saw a group of Jewish children emerge from a hut. These children were being order around and shouted at, Ã¢â¬Å"Emerging from a hut in the distance, a group of children huddled together and were being shouted at by a group of soldiers. The more they were shouted, the closer they huddled together.Ã¢â¬ The children were also unfairly mocked and jeered by the soldiers at the concentration camp, Ã¢â¬Å"One of the soldiers lunged towards them and they separated and seemed to do what he wanted them to do all along, which was to stand in a single line. When they did, the soldiers all started to laugh and applaud them.Ã¢â¬ The setting of BrunoÃ¢â¬â¢s house in Out-With conveys this theme. When Bruno wanted a tyre to build his swing he asks Lieutenant Kotler for one. Lieutenant Kotler impolitely orders Pavel (a Jewish waiter) to help Bruno find a tyre, Ã¢â¬Å"Ã¢â¬ËHey, you!Ã¢â¬â¢ he shouted, then adding a word that Bru no did not understand. Ã¢â¬ËCome over here, you-Ã¢â¬â¢ He said the word again, and something about the harsh sound of it made Bruno look away and feel ashamed to be part of this it all. Pavel came towards them and Kotler spoke to him insolently.Ã¢â¬ The effect of war on children and families is a theme often used throughout the story. The plot and the key events of the novel help convey the multiple themes in the novel. The effect of war has rendered BrunoÃ¢â¬â¢s mother to discard her health and take more medicinal sherries. Also it makes BrunoÃ¢â¬â¢s mother to have more afternoon naps and to be quieter during the day, Ã¢â¬Å"Mother kept very quiet during the day and was having an awful lot more of her afternoon naps, some of them not even in the afternoon but before lunch, and Bruno was worried for her health because heÃ¢â¬â¢d never known anyone need quite so many medicinal sherries.Ã¢â¬ Gretel had been effected by the war and decided not to play with dolls. She instead had put up maps of Europe where she put little pins into them and moved them every day after consulting the newspaper, Ã¢â¬Å" Gretel had decided that she didnÃ¢â¬â¢t like dolls anymor e and had put them all into four large bags and thrown them away. In their place she had hung up maps of Europe that father had given her, and every day she put little pins into them and moved the pins around constantly after consulting the daily newspaper.Ã¢â¬ In conclusion, the themes of the novel (the effect of war on children and families, the innocence of children and the cruelty and unfairness of discrimination) are conveyed through narrative techniques (character, plot and setting). The changes made required time to implement and people who believed that many were suffering and dying from preventable diseases. Most of the sanitary era movement took place within England and the United States during the nineteenth century. Introduction Many students around the United States have reading difficulties, which can be due to a variety of reason such as: low socioeconomic status, family history of learning disabilities, a neurological disorder, limited exposure, etc. Reading difficulties can lead to further problems with education and learning, therefore the struggles should be addressed and intervention techniques should be implemented promptly. The interventions need to be individualized for the student based on their needs in order to improve the studentÃ¢â¬â¢s reading to the best of their abilities. Swanson et al. (2011) conducted a meta-analysis, A Synthesis of Read-Aloud Interventions on Early Reading Outcomes Among Preschool Through Third Graders at Risk for Reading Difficulties, to determine which interventions were the most useful for preschoolers to third graders who were at risk for reading difficulties. Their research examined the effects of five read-aloud interventions, which included: dialogic reading, repeated reading, limited questioning, computer assisted, and extended vocabulary (pg. 261). Such an activity would also allow for exploitation of professional experiences, gaining valuable knowledge about what constitutes legitimate business activity and relationships.
